Lt. Col. (Rtd) Muhammad Faruk Khan was born on 18th September 1951 in the renowned and well-known Khan Family of Bezra, Muksudpur Upazilla of Gopalgonj. His father late Serajul Karim Khan (Nanna Khan) and mother late Khaleda Karim Khan are known for their social work. He is the eldest of seven brothers.
After passing the SSC from Armanitola Govt High School and HSC from Dhaka College, he got commission in Pakistan Army on 18th April 1971. Mr. Khan served in the Army as an Infantry Officer for twenty-six years and took early retirement in 1995 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He obtained graduation degree from Pakistan Military academy and secured Master degree in Defense studies in 1994 from the National University of Bangladesh.
Civil Aviation Minister Lt. Col. (Rtd) Muhammad Faruk Khan was elected Member of Parliament from Awami League in 1996, 2001 and again in 2009 from Gopalganj-1 constituency encompassing Muksudpur and Kasiani Upazillas. In the last 9th parliamentary election of 2009 he defeated his nearest rival of BNP by a margin of 1,74,268 votes. In the 7th parliament he served as a member of Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertaking and defense. In the 8th Parliamentary Committee he was a Member of Public Undertaking and Youth and Sports. He is the Commerce and Industries Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Central working Committee and Secretary of the party sub-committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry.
He is a presidium member of Bangladesh Commonwealth Society, Adviser of Bangladesh-China People's Friendship Association, and Treasurer of Global Legislator's organization for a Balanced Environment. He is the Chairman of governing bodies of a member of colleges and Jashimunnessa High School managing committee. He is an organizer of different educational, social and research oriented organizations of his constituency and a life member of Red Crescent Society of Bangladesh.
Mr. Khan is the Vice-Chairman of All party Parliamentary Group on prevention of HIV AIDS and Trafficking and Vice-Chairman of all party parliamentary groups on education. He was the leader of Bangladesh Parliamentarian team in 2000 to observe activities of different Parliaments in U.K, USA, Australia and Switzerland and also visited UN Headquarters and New York City Hall. Mr. Khan was the Vice-President of Bangladesh Olympic Association from 1996-2001 and acted as the Chef-de-Mission of Bangladesh Contingent in the 13th Asian Games held in Bangkok in 1998. He was also the president of Bangladesh Squash Rackets Federation from 1996-2001.
Mr. Khan visited USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, South Africa, South Korea, KSA, Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan, Thailand, Singapore, Nepal, Malaysia and India in connection with seminars, workshops and other activities.
Mr. Khan is married to Mrs. Nilufar Khan and has two daughters Qantara Khan and Qareena Khan. His hobbies are reading, listening to music and playing golf.
